a) Since Square EFGD = Square HBJI Therefore, any side of Square = any side of Square HBJI ED = HB = 8 - 4x Therefore the side of the square EFGD is 8 - 4x AE = AD - ED AE = 5 - (8 - 4x) AE = 4x - 3 b) Area of Rectangle ABCD = 5 x 8 = 40 Area of Square EFGD = Area of Square HBJI = (8 - 4x)(8 - 4x) = 64 - 64x + 16x^2 Therefore the area of the polygon AHIJCGFE = Rectangle ABCD - EFGD - HBJI = Rectangle ABCD - 2 x (EFGD) = 40 - 2(64 - 64x + 16x^2) = 40 - 128 + 128x - 32x^2 = -32x^2 + 128x -88
